Your budget is on track, and then the car breaks down a week before payday. Now you have to choose between fixing the car you need for work and covering your other expenses. Unexpected costs rarely wait for a convenient time.
A short-term loan from a licensed moneylender is one way to bridge a temporary gap. This guide explains how it works, what you’ll need, and how to borrow without putting yourself under more strain.
What Is a Short-Term Loan?
A short-term loan is a smaller loan repaid over a relatively short period, usually to cover an immediate expense until your next income arrives. Because the repayment period is short, it’s best suited to temporary cash flow gaps rather than long-term financing.
Tradition Credit offers several loan types, including personal loans, fast cash loans and payday loans, for both Singaporeans and foreigners.
When Does a Short-Term Loan Make Sense?
Short-term loans are most useful for urgent, unavoidable expenses, such as:
- Car repairs, especially if you rely on your vehicle to earn a living (we also offer a Taxi/Grab/Gojek loan)
- Medical bills that insurance or MediSave doesn’t fully cover (see our medical loan)
- Home repairs that can’t wait
- A gap before payday when rent or bills are due first
- Business cash flow gaps, such as paying a supplier before a client pays you
A loan is a poor fit for non-essential spending like holidays or shopping. Interest and fees add to the cost, and you’ll still have to repay it from your future income.
Licensed Moneylender vs. Bank: What’s the Difference?
| Licensed moneylender | Bank | |
|---|---|---|
| Approval speed | Often same day, once documents are ready | Can take longer |
| Requirements | More flexible, including for bad credit | Usually stricter income and credit criteria |
| Interest | Regulated, up to 4% per month | Often lower |
| Best for | Urgent, short-term needs | Larger or longer-term borrowing, if you qualify |
Banks often cost less, so if you have time and a good credit record, it’s worth checking them first. A licensed moneylender can make sense when you need money quickly or a bank has turned you down.
How to Apply
- Fill in the application form. You can apply online in a few minutes, using Singpass or a manual form.
- Get a call back. A loan advisor will contact you within one business day to explain the terms and tell you what to bring.
- Visit our office. Singapore law requires licensed moneylenders to verify your identity in person at their registered office before releasing a loan. A loan approved and paid out entirely online is not legal.
- Collect your cash. Once you’re approved and have signed the agreement, the money is disbursed.
What Documents Do I Need?
Requirements can vary, so your loan advisor will confirm exactly what to bring. Typically:
- Identification: your NRIC, or passport and work pass if you’re a foreigner
- Proof of residence: such as a recent bill with your name and address
- Proof of income, if you’re employed: your latest payslips
- If you’re self-employed: your ACRA business profile and supporting documents showing business income, such as a tenancy agreement (see our self-employed loan)
What Will It Cost?
Licensed moneylenders in Singapore must stay within the legal limits:
- Interest of up to 4% per month
- An administrative fee of up to 10% of the loan amount (for example, up to $100 on a $1,000 loan)
- Late interest of up to 4% per month, plus a late fee of up to $60 per month of delay
There is no penalty for repaying early, so settling a loan ahead of schedule simply saves you interest. Every charge that applies to your loan must appear in your contract before you sign.
Tips for Borrowing Responsibly
- Borrow only what you need. A smaller loan means smaller repayments and less interest.
- Check the total repayment, not just the monthly instalment.
- Match repayments to your pay cycle so each payment is manageable. Ask about monthly installment options.
- Know your rights. Since 15 September 2026, you have three business days to change your mind on an unsecured loan without paying interest.
- Talk to your lender early if you think you may miss a payment.
- Use only licensed lenders, and learn how to spot loan scams. You can also read what to know before borrowing from a moneylender and whether a personal loan is safe.
Frequently Asked Questions
How fast can I get a short-term loan?
Approval and disbursement can be quick, often on the same day, once your documents are ready and you’ve visited our office. The exact timing depends on your assessment.
Can I get a short-term loan with bad credit?
Possibly. Licensed moneylenders look at what you can afford to repay now, not just your credit score. Approval still depends on assessment and a credit check.
Can I apply entirely online?
You can start your application online, but you must visit the lender’s registered office to verify your identity and sign before you receive the loan.
